Time for Ice Fishermen to Break Out Gear

If you can't wait to go ice fishing, then gear up for panfish and head for southeast Michigan's Irish Hills.

That is where you will find the best bets for fishable ice and active bluegills and crappies into the weekend, according to a check of observers across the region. And western Lake Erie is definitely a no-go yet, even though ice is forming and some satellite maps indicate as much as 90 percent "coverage," which is not an indication of thickness or quality.

Tom Knutson, at Knutson's Recreational Sales, in Brooklyn, Mich., said most of the lakes in the Irish Hills have five to seven inches of ice and anglers are starting to take crappies on minnows and small plastic baits and bluegills on waxworms and spikes.

He said the go-to lakes early in the season would include Devils, Vineyard, Clark, Sand, and Wamplers. But he warned that Cherry Point on Devils still is dangerous, as is a "goose hole" on Sand. So beware. "We're getting there," he added, "it's just now finally starting."

Knutson said anglers can expect a lot of traffic on Wamplers Lake because of practice fishing by competitors in the 150-team Midwest Open tournament set for Jan. 31.
